With our thee children getting older and into their teenage years, we don't sit around the table for dinner as often as we used to, which was daily. At the suggestion of our oldest son, I built an island in the kitchen. It has been paradigm shifting for our family and the kitchen is used much more for social gatherings for our family. The TV in the kitchen, which Andrea resisted at first, has become one of Andrea's most used tool in the kitchen for cooking off recipes she finds on tik tok, youtube, or the internet. The kitchen island is bolted to the floor via 6 lag screws, 3 on each side. As with the recessed lighting throughout the house, I did the electrical work myself.
The shelf was my middle son's suggestion. He noticed we never used the blackboard that was hung on the side of the refrigerator enclosure via the french cleat I built. So I took it off, and rebuilt the blackboard into a shelf which my wife uses for her seasonal decorations. A win-win for the family.
